One of my favorite parts about being in Guatemala is how much we play.
The moms.
The dads.
The volunteers.
The children.
Soccer games.
Red light, green light.
Tag.
And lots and lots of laughter.
For a little while, everyone gets to set aside the stress, responsibilities, and challenges waiting back at home.
But it is also so much more than just games.
When we play together, something important happens.
We stop being strangers.
The language barriers feel smaller.
Trust begins to grow.
Relationships become real.
Some of the most beautiful moments during our volunteer trips do not happen while building garden towers or delivering groceries.
They happen while chasing a soccer ball across a field.
They happen while laughing with a child during a game of tag.
They happen when a volunteer realizes that despite growing up in different countries and speaking different languages, we have far more in common than we often think.
There is something powerful about joy shared across cultures and generations.
It reminds us that meaningful change is not built through projects alone.
It is built through relationships.
And relationships are often built one simple moment at a time.

PS: The older I get, the more I believe that play is not something we outgrow. It may be one of the things that helps us stay connected to each other.
