What Is Voluntourism and Does It Really Make a Difference?
So what is voluntourism?
Voluntourism blends volunteering and tourism. It means traveling to a new place to serve while also experiencing the local culture. Unlike traditional volunteering, which often happens in your own community, voluntourism usually takes place abroad and for a shorter time.
The key is balance. A meaningful volunteer vacation should combine service and cultural learning without losing focus on the needs of the community.
Why Voluntourism Can Be Life Changing
When done well, voluntourism changes both the volunteer and the community.
Volunteers gain hands on experience. They meet new people. They develop skills like problem solving and adaptability. In addition, they build confidence by stepping outside their comfort zone.
More importantly, they gain perspective.
However, the real impact happens when service is done with humility and partnership.
A Story From Guatemala
Several years ago, we visited a family to install a wood burning stove. A young Boy Scout had raised enough money so the family would not need to pay the $250 cost.
Before we arrived, I asked the family to prepare anything they might want to sell. The mother made hand woven mats from reeds that grow in Lake Atitlán. We learned that ancient Mayan royalty once used similar mats instead of sitting directly on the ground.
The family did not own tables or chairs. They used these mats daily.
One volunteer and I decided to purchase every mat she had made. Together, we handed her about $13 US dollars.
At first, she did not smile. She did not speak. She simply stared at the money in her hands.
Later, our translator explained that she had never held that much money at one time in her life. She was too shocked to respond.
That moment reminded us that small actions can carry deep meaning. We were grateful to pay a fair wage for her work. In return, we brought home beautiful handicrafts and an unforgettable lesson.
How Voluntourism Supports Communities
Voluntourism can provide needed support when it focuses on long term partnership.
For example, volunteer vacations may include:
• Building homes
• Installing stoves
• Teaching in classrooms
• Supporting fair trade artisans
When service aligns with local leadership, it strengthens communities instead of replacing them.

Common Misconceptions About Voluntourism
Some people believe voluntourism only benefits the volunteer. While volunteers certainly grow, ethical programs prioritize community needs first.
Does Voluntourism Create Dependency?
This is a common concern.
Short term service can cause harm if it replaces sustainable development. However, when projects empower local leaders, the outcome is different.
For example, we hire local workers, partner with families, and support long term goals. Community members help guide every project. As a result, solutions are built together rather than imposed from outside.
Is Voluntourism a Quick Fix?
Deep challenges require long term commitment.
Meaningful change takes years of trust, planning, and collaboration. Therefore, volunteer efforts must be part of a larger strategy. Ongoing support and local leadership are essential.
Our Long Term Commitment in Guatemala
Be Humanitarian has been involved in voluntourism for more than 13 years. We do not simply visit a community. Instead, we build relationships that last.
In the past three years alone, we have:
• Donated over 6,200 pounds of supplies
• Provided more than 55,000 meals
• Purchased land and opened a sewing center
• Built over 1,000 gardens, producing more than one million meals per year
• Offered health exams and vitamins
Because of this long term commitment, we have watched children grow from infancy through kindergarten and beyond. Our goal is to support them all the way to university.
