The signed thank you card with photos of the awesome volunteers

In December I received a phone call from Patsy Ellinger asking if Be Humanitarian had a service project that her family could participate in. I was thrilled to brainstorm with her and create something that her family could give and something that would greatly benefit our kiddos. Patsy decided that her family would be able to fill 15 backpacks with much needed school supplies. We were able to provide them with 15 empty backpacks (that had already been donated to us:) and they took it from there. Patsy’s extended family gathered for their holiday party and worked together to create a gift for 15 grateful kiddos.

In January two volunteers loaded up these backpacks and traveled to Guatemala with me. It was such a joy to give these much appreciated gifts to our families. One of our newer moms Rosa had tears in her eyes when her 8 year old daughter received her first brand new backpack. She told us that never in her life has she been able to provide a brand new backpack and all the items needed for her daughter to attend school. Another new mom told us that although this might seem like small gifts to us it means everything to her. Her family is homeless and her and her husband are working diligently to make sure their boys attend school. They too have never been able to provide all the needed school supplies to their boys and were in tears with gratitude. This entire project occurred because some amazing women collected new backpacks and donated them to us and then Patsy’s family volunteered to fill and them. Then two awesome volunteers joined me in Guatemala and agreed to carry 200 pounds of donations with them. It takes a cool community to create a beautiful event for all of our kiddos.
It is not often that I receive a thank you note for “this opportunity to serve” and it was much appreciated. Thank you for your generosity and the thoughtfulness of your family Patsy.

We are able to add new kiddos to our program when generous individuals decide to give monthly. Please reach out if you have any questions about sponsoring a kiddo in Guatemala. Thank you so much – Tobie Spears

Our mission is to inspire our volunteers to become global citizens who take a hands-on role in the world around them. We believe our duty is to improve the lives of those in need. We aim to improve the future of some of Guatemala’s improvised people, and help them to break the poverty cycle through early nutrition, education and self-sustainability.
